(1/27/2019) - Several Mid-Michigan students will get an extra long weekend thanks to a winter storm bearing down on the region, poised to drop up to a foot of snow in some parts Monday. By 5 p.m., several school districts in Midland, Saginaw and Shiawassee counties called off classes for Monday ahead of the storm. Some school administrators in the region warned there could be multiple snow days this week thanks to the storm and bitterly cold temperatures. RELATED: Click here for a full list of Mid-Michigan closings The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for Genesee, Shiawassee, Lapeer and counties to the north beginning after midnight Monday and lasting through Monday night. Counties to the south were under a Winter Weather Advisory. All of Mid-Michigan will see significant snowfall on Monday. Totals will range from 4 to 8 inches in the southern parts of the region up to 7 to 11 inches around and north of Saginaw Bay by Monday night. Winds will gust over 25 mph through the day, blowing the snow and creating visibility problems throughout the day. The wind will also make measuring the total snowfall difficult. On and off snow showers blown around by strong winds will continue to create visibility issues on Tuesday. Then bitterly cold temperatures not seen around Mid-Michigan in 25 years will settle in after the storm. The high temperature on Wednesday could remain below zero with morning lows double digits below zero. The Flint and Tri-Cities areas haven't seen a daily high temperature below zero in 25 years. That streak could end this week. The high temperature on Thursday will remain in the single digits with a morning low below zero. Wind chills on Wednesday and Thursday likely will reach dangerous levels of -25 degrees or colder in most of Mid-Michigan.
