(01/27/19) - School districts are in the process of deciding whether to close schools as a winter storm heads for mid-Michigan.
Owosso Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Andrea Tuttle told parents that there is a likelihood school could be cancelled one or more days this week.
She said Owosso has used all six forgiven school closings this year. While the school can petition the Michigan Department of Education for an additional three forgiven school closings, she says it is a possibility that more days will have to be added to the calendar. That determination will be made in April.
Tuttle says -20-degrees is the standard for school closings throughout Shiawassee County.
Bentley Community Schools in Genesee County had also issued a similar warning to parents and staff by Sunday morning.
Saginaw ISD (SISD) Superintendent Kathy Stewart told ABC12 that every district within the ISD makes an individual decision about closing school because of the cold.
SISD uses a sustained range of -20 to -25-degrees as grounds to consider closing school. Windchills are expected to be in that range or lower during some days this week.
