(1/26/2019) - The snowfall forecast for Monday still looks significant as the latest information is helping narrow down the timing and how much Mid-Michigan will receive. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Midland, Bay, Huron, Saginaw, Tuscola, Sanilac and counties farther north for late Sunday night through Monday evening. First and foremost, we have the chance to see some changes to this forecast around the I-69 corridor before the storm arrives. Check back for the latest forecast Sunday. As of Saturday afternoon, it appears the heaviest snow totals will be from the Tri-Cities northward with even higher amounts toward Grand Rapids. Those higher amounts to the north will be due to lighter, fluffier snow. Around Grand Rapids it’ll be due to lake enhancement on the back side of the storm. The Flint area could see temperatures briefly warm up enough to compact snow just a bit, thus leading to lower totals. However, there is uncertainty that we’ll get that warm. If Flint stays cold, the area will have much higher totals. This is why it’s important to check back for forecast updates as the storm get closer. Either way, everyone in Mid-Michigan will get significant snowfall. There will be wind gusts around 25 mph to 35 mph blowing the snow around. Travel will be very difficult and may even lead to road closures through the day Monday. Visibility will be near zero at times. Expect snow to start in Flint and the Tri-Cities around 9 a.m. and end in the early overnight hours into Tuesday. It’ll be very heavy at times, maybe even on the order of 1 to 2 inches per hour in heavy bursts. Some lingering snow showers will continue on Tuesday, mostly due to lake effect. Some changes to this forecast are still possible, especially near the I-69 corridor, as the storm system moves in. Watch for updates on the forecast on Sunday.
